Can't Fight the Moonlight
Lyrics: Diane Warren Music: Diane Warren
Under a lover's sky, gonna be with you
And no one's gonna be around
If you think that you won't fall
Well just wait until, 'till the sun goes down
Underneath the starlight, starlight
There's a magical feeling so right
It will steal your heart tonight
You can try to resist
Try to hide from my kiss
But you know, but you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
Deep in the dark, you'll surrender your heart
Don't you know, don't you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
No, you can't fight it
It's gonna get to your heart
There's no escaping love
Once a gentle breeze
Sweeps its spell upon your heart
No matter what you think
It won't be too long 'till you’re in my arms
Underneath the starlight, starlight
We'll be lost in the rhythm so right
Feel it steal your heart tonight
You can try to resist
Try to hide from my kiss
But you know, but you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
Deep in the dark, you'll surrender your heart
Don't you know, don't you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
No, you can't fight itNo matter what you do
The night is gonna get to you
(Your gonna know)
(That I know)
Don't try, you're never gonna win
Underneath the starlight, starlight
There's a magical feeling so right
It will steal your heart tonight
You can try to resist
Try to hide from my kiss
But you know, but you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
Deep in the dark, you'll surrender your heart
But you know, but you know that you
Can't fight the moonlight
No, you can't fight it
It's gonna get to your heart

To Be, or Not To Be

William Shakespeare - To be, or not to be (from Hamlet 3/1)
To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Unit 7 Language & Literature 1

Fixing the English Language

1. What is the evolution of language from Old English, Middle English and Modern English? What are their features?
Old English, developed from the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages, was characterized by limited vocabulary with word endings that identified the gender, number and case of words.
Middle English was distinguished by a large influx of French words into the language, and the shift to more simplified word forms.
Modern English featured a move toward standardization of the language by formalizing both usage and spelling.

2. In the 17th and 18th century, why did some writers hold a low opinion of English? How did English writers at that time solve the problem?
Because French and Latin followed specific patterns and rules, these languages were more prestigious than English.
They advanced the idea of a language academy, modeled after the Italian and French academies, as a move toward standardization.

3. What is the purpose of English academy?
The English academy should create a standardized grammar and dictionary for the English language.

4. Describe prescriptive and descriptive grammar.
Such rules of double negatives, contractions, and spelling are known today as prescriptive grammar.
Descriptive grammar objectively described the rules native speakers seemed to follow.

5. Give me some examples of the debate between the prescriptivists and the descriptivists.
(1) Prescriptivists view that English sentences should never end with a preposition. In common usage, prepositions show up quite regularly at the end of sentences.
(2) Prescriptivists also view the usage of “ain’t” as a contraction of “am not” as inelegant and wrong, whereas many dictionaries list “ain’t”, indicating the word is used by speakers of English.
(3) Prescriptivists also disallow regional usage that does not follow the standard rules of English.

6. Is corruption of the English language a problem? What are the opinions of prescriptivists and descriptivists?
Prescriptivists claim the change of the English language is corruption, but descriptivists’ answer is contrary. The descriptivists say that English is changing as all languages, whether change is good or bad is not the question, because change is inevitable.

Unit 3 Health & Medicine 1

The Uncommon Cold

1. What are the symptoms of a cold?
There are the sore throat, runny nose, constant sneezing and headaches.

2. What are the two major difficulties of finding a cure of cold?
(1) The common cold itself is not a single disease, and some cold viruses have the ability to change their molecular appearance.
(2) The cold virus does not actually cause our cold symptoms.

3. Describe BIRR4 project.
BIRR4 is an anti-viral molecule, and can prevent the binding of the virus to cells in the nose. This binding is an essential first step to start a viral infection and, were it preventable, many of the infections would be by passed.

4. Why did Boehringer drop BIRR4 project?
Because they found that this treatment only worked just prior to getting a cold or in the first stages of infection when most people do not yet realize anything is wrong.

5. How do we get the symptoms from colds?
The symptoms are produced by our body’s immune response, not by the virus itself.

6. What is the possible suggestion for finding a cure for colds?
We must weaken our immune system’s response.

7. What is the cocktail therapy for colds and what is its limitation?
Through a cocktail of certain drugs- interferon, ibuprofen, and chlorpheniramine- cold sufferers would be able to decrease the anti-inflammatory part of the immune response and get rid of their symptoms, while still allowing their body to fight off the remaining viral infection. But a single dose of interferon is too expensive and is unavailable in large over-the-counter quantities.

Lovin' You
(Music & Lyrics by Minnie Riperton & Richard Rudolph)

Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful
And makin' love with you is all I wanna do

Lovin' you is more than just a dream comes true
And everything that I do is out
of lovin' you

No one else can make me feel the colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime
Lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day of my life is filled with lovin' you
Lovin' you, I see your soul come shinin' through
And every time that we, ooh...
I'm more in love with you

No one else can make me feel the colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime
Cause lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful
Every day of my life is filled with lovin' you
Lovin' you, I see your soul come shinin' through
Every time that we, ooh...
I'm more in love with you

Staying up

People nowadays staying up late is become a habit gradually. For modern people, the habit to stay up late is more and more popular! Not only because of works or the study people stayed up helplessly, but also because indulging oneself in loafing away the whole evening. It is not good for health when a person gets used to stay up late. Staying up excessively is the same as fuddle and smoking in excess, and will damage the health gravely.

In any event, some people still maintain the good life habits. When the person meets the problem of staying up late or not, she is often puzzled regarding the choice because of different reasons. But her decision will be able to affect health profoundly. We can estimate approximately why people choose to stay up and how the choices affect health.

Most people have stayed up because of different reasons. In order to complete the work, take a test, or approve for the social associates, people must choose to stay up late. Of course students are included. Now many students begin to have a habit to stay up because of reports, exams, and parties. It is worried to find that the time a student spends enjoying having fun now is much more than before; especially, the case of undergraduates is even much worse. Day after day, the student will become sleepless at night. Then she studies in very low spirits, and her grades may go backward.

People know that staying up is not good, but they often have no idea of the side effects to which staying up will bring. At first, the simple sequelae of staying up may be a headache, and a black eye and whelks. If people do not realize to control their life habit, the situation will become worse. The function of the immunity system will deteriorate; for example, the liver function and the quantity of adrenalin secretion will be aberrant. And we can also find the person who often stays up suffers from adult chronic illness is easier than a normal person. It is generally believed that staying up is able to hurt human body, and it is a really bad lifestyle.

Even though there are so many people included me to stay up late. If a person must stay up late, supposed to get more sufficient nutrition to protect her form harm. When feeling tired from staying up, she should supplement enough vitamins such as vitamin B and vitamin C. Do not eat the food which has high calories like the sweets and fast food because the kind of food will burn internal vitamin B that makes human body weary more easily. We can not avoid the harm from staying up; at least, we can let the bodily injury reduce to the smallest one.

However, staying up is still an ungainful thing. We should work and rest normally, and avoid staying up late. Keeping the lifestyle regularly and people will get a good health.

I Need A Rest !

I feel everything is wrong recently. : (

First, my condition turns into ill-being because I have loose bowels and catch a cold.

The cold brings many abominable symptoms such as the sore throat, runny nose, headaches, and fevers.

Especially, headaches and fevers make me feel dizzy all day.

When I learn something new, I can not realize what I am learning, but get a sensation of giddiness.

The next reason is staying up again and again.

Staying up late is not good to health; in particular, I have had an illness.

Nevertheless, a good deal of reports and assignments need finishing by me, which makes me determine to stay up.

During these days, I know profoundly that my body and sprint have got a limit, so all I have to do is take a rest.

I hope to go to bed before p.m. 11, and it is my only request!

God bless me!
